Installation of Prefabricated Mechanical Electrical & Plumbing (MEP) Module System at a Singapore camp.

Published on: 17 July 2024

Needs

Client is studying ways to improve productivity for installation of MEP services by implementing Design for Manufacture and Assembly methodology.

Challenges

The prefabricated MEP modules are chosen at the location of a long stairway, requiring drop in height for MEP services and modules. The steep stairways on site proved to be challenging for installation of modules.

Solutions
Our team held a site investigation and came out with a proposition and concept of work. We designed 2 types of prefabricated MEP module with vary length of threaded rod using different types of concrete anchor. We also constructed a loading platform to enable easy access and working platform along the stairways, and also used specialized lifting equipment to install the modules.

Using Walraven Strut Chanel, Throughbolt Anchor, Drop in Anchor and threaded rod, we designed a module that fulfilled the client’s needs, and also able to overcome the challenging site condition. Services are also installed using Walraven Pipe Clamps and Rapid Strut quick fix accessories, allowing MEP contractors to easily fix, adjust and align their services during coupling process.

The productivity improvements are obvious, 8 modules of 20m stretch required just 3 workdays from first fix to complete handover. Fabrication at factory increases speed of production, decreases material wastage, while waiting for structural / architectural works to be completed. Just in time delivery and installation also meant that on-site storage is insignificant. The distinction of prefabricated module lies in the ability to assemble MEP services, while awaiting prior work to be done on construction site.
